Well, if UF and UGA hadn't played in a head to head, I'd say that was fine. As it is, head to head wins out.

We had permanent opponents before there were divisions.

You sure did, five of them with one rotating. You also only had 10 conference teams. Since apparently it doesn't go without saying, you want 12 or 14 or 16 teams and permanent opponents, it necessitates a non-Ole Miss approach to crowning a conference champion in football.

The SECCG shouldn't be an automatic pass to get into a BCS game. It isn't a risk nothing and still get rewarded kind of thing. You lose, your lose your chance at a BCS game (on most occasions). I don't see anything wrong with that at all.

Right... but there were always a few SEC teams that rarely played. Florida and Alabama rarely played. Georgia and Alabama rarely played. It's not that different than it was now, even with more teams. We also had a shorter season.

Agreed. LSU goes 11-2 in 2005 and goes to the Chicken Bowl, no one says a thing. LSU takes care of business and blasts a top 10 opponent. Bama losees a SECCG and still gets a BCS bowl, they go on to embarrass the conference by getting railed by Utah. That loss spawns a non-AQ bias that gets them in all kind of bowls they don't belong in.
Then Georgia loses to Boise. Both of the teams in the SECCG deserve a shite bowl if they lose.

I should go on the record that I absolutely think a one-loss Florida team should be rewarded with a BCS bowl game over a two-loss divisional champion. Given that BCS bowls go to champions of conferences unless they are in the Championship game, I can see an argument for the runner up getting the nod. Similarly, I just don't think that Saban's advocating for a divisional winner for a BCS bowl berth is horribly hypocritical in contrast to his argument #1 vs #2 in the Championship game.
What makes it hypocritical to me is that if he were in Florida's place, I suspect he would have advocated the other position.
