What explains the difference in performance between 2011 LSU and 2012?

In 2011, LSU played a much more difficult schedule and dominated every team on it except for Alabama. The Tigers played with swagger and were ruthlessly efficient. Their defense was suffocating, special teams were full of explosive plays, and the offense efficiently took advantage of every short field.
Fast forward to 2012, and LSU looks like a shell of its former self. It played a 1-7 AU team to a draw, narrowly escaping with a 12-10 victory.
In its first real legitimate road test, the Tigers lost to FL who played a more physical game with 25 straight rushes for a 14-6 win.
LSU beats an explosive A&M team 24-19, coming from behind after being the beneficiary of 4 A&M turnovers.
What explains the fact that the 2012 LSU team has severely underperformed expectations?
Is it that attrition from suspensions, academics and injuries could not be overcome.
Is it mainly an ineffective offense, due to Oline injuries, dropped passes, below average QB play and ineffective play calling.
Is it a lack of team chemistry and/or leadership?
Or are you just lying in wait, like a snake in the weeds, waiting to resurrect your season and dash the NC hopes of an undefeated Alabama.

Beats the hell out of me, to be honest.

O-line injuries is my best guess.
Mett is usually running for his life after 2 to 3 seconds which doesn't allow for deeper routes to develop.
ETA: we also haven't had very good play from our wide receivers. It all adds up to one hell of a bad year for Mett.

OBJ has been the biggest disappointment to me.

ANd yet he's arguably the best we have.

we have the 2010 Bama syndrome except w/o coming off a title. Luckily for us, we're still in the hunt for the crystal this late in the season

Man, I'm so waiting for this game. LSU really looked like a top 10 twice in 2010 that I remember...UA and Cotton Bowl. I can feel it.

The losses on the offensive line are being overlooked. LSU needs to have 5 lineman a TE and two RBs to protect Mett against a decent defense. Even then they are still limited to quick short passes due to bad protection and QB mobility.
They have no deep threat because of pass protection, if you can stop the run and move the ball on them you will win.

I am not trying to flame. This is a serious question.
Does anyone think that the BCSCG shutout loss has had some lingering negative effect?
Mack Brown's Longhorns have not been the same.
Meyer's gators are just now coming back.

This theory that one bad loss destroys a program for years to come is one of the most retarded sports cliches to come along in years.
I don't think that one bad game 10 months ago is having any affect on this year's Tigers in any way, shape, or form.

LSU destroyed the Canes and now they are gone.
They pummeled ND and they are just now back in top 10.
Is this right?

It comes down to lack of on-field leadership, poor QB and OLine play, and injuries.

I am only asking the question. However, no one has provided an explanation for the obvious drop in performance.
I do think you lost your best playmakers in Mo Claiborne and TM7 which accounts for a huge loss of production in special teams and a big loss to your secondary. TM7 had 6 Forced Fumbles, so you lost a lot of key turnovers. He was just a firestarter who seemed to provide a spark whenever you needed a big play.
I have frankly been underwhelmed by your Dline. Mingo and Montgomery, while good, are not playing like top 10 NFL Draft picks.

Then they lost badger. Then the new QB wasn't so great. Injuries etc.
Its just been a bad year all the way around.
You have to be extremely lucky all year in everything to get that ugly crystal.

I thought I gave a decent explination.

True, but TM7 didn't play on the offense and that is what is ailing us right now.

Watch a little closer. They have been performing up to expectations IMO. They did a damn good job against Johnny Football.
