He intentionally incited the "rebellion" by the threat of military action against the states. He knew he was creating an environment that would lead to war and he willfully proceeded.

His face should be stricken from the currency and his monument ground to dust to be used in the construction of toilets for Krystals and Waffle Houses across the south.

I didn't ever read about a northern senator beating a southern senator to the point of brain damage in session and then running like a scared bitch back home to mamma.
