It seemed good in theory b/c Smith had been our special teams coach for the last few years, he's coached with just about all of this staff already, he has 16 years head coaching experience, the players like him, and it would allow our two coordinators to keep full focus on their duties. We thought we had all the pieces for a championship run and didn't want to bring in a new HC from the outside (our options were limited anyway at the time) who would bring a new coaching staff and playbook. With John L, we kept our systems in place.

I guess the senile part didn't factor in. He legitametely sounded crazy.
