Part of the problem is the writer's own profession, jumping on every little morsel of innuendo whether it's truthful or not in order to have something to write about because a lot of sports "writers" today are hacks who couldn't tell you the difference in a 4-3, 3-4, or 3-3-5.

The media is self-serving in this respect. They want to bitch about the degeneration of offseason discussion when they're the ones producing the shitty discussion and giving the reports validity.

The media regurgitates crap they read from various message boards. Sports radio hacks do the exact same thing.

99% of the time the journalists and sports radio hosts get their topics of discussion from message boards. They sit on their asses and surf the web to find out every little tid bit they can. They are lazy and couldn't actually research anything if they had to.

Been a few times, I've seen articles, based on things posted on this forum.

It also doesn't help that sports journalist right now are getting moved "up" in their profession by being investigative journalist. Look at the moves guys like Pete Thamel and Pat Forde have made in the last 6 months. They've writing less about the actual sport and more about being the NCAA defacto henchmen.
