he MWC wasn't a typical non-AQ conference. They had good teams every single year. Even outside of the Big Three.
And Va Tech and Wisconsin were definitely more talented than TCU and Boise.
The past 2 years it has been like that. The WAC was the best non aq conference with Nevada, Hawaii, Boise State, and Fresno State.
They were more talented, but its not a huge talent gap like you think, especially Wisconsin.
The Boise State win over Va Tech is much more impressive than TCU over Wisconsin. Wisconsin is usually around the 50 range when it comes to recruiting rankings. The farther you go down, the less important recruiting rankings are.

Pretty small sample size, and yeah BYU went to the shitter so I'll give you it's been weaker than usual for a few years.

Agreed.

I find the number of wins these guys are able to amass over more talented teams, along with the domination they consistently display over quality opposition in their own conference, along with taking care of business against the trash in their conference a pretty solid coaching job. Patterson in particular, has displayed over and over again that his defense will rise up to the challenge against top notch opposition and win the game for him (...the fighting RGIII's not included )
Most people agree that Patterson meets the criteria at this point in his career as a "proven head coach". Not everyone agrees on Peterson, but I think he's solid as a rock. His teams seem to drop a game they shouldn't every year though.
