I majored in Forestry in college and my guess is:

Right now the root system is severely stressed and cannot provide enough water or nutrients to the tree's crown.

Without the proper ammount of water reaching the crown the crown will die or become brittle. If the weight of the limbs were to cause any forks to split it would be game over for the tree.

By cutting back the top or crown, it gives the tree more time for its root system to improve and lessens the chance of more damage to the tree from wind or weight.

Any hope for the tree surviving, probably rests on healing the root system and allowing the crown to regrow.


Disclaimer: I do not know what kind of poison was used or how the poison works. Just my guess as to why they would prune the crown back.

OMG people, please stop with the limb questions!!!

The tree is dead! They are cutting the limbs off a)for safety (dont want them falling on people and dont want AU kids to climb them) and b)its a normal process of starting to remove a tree that large!

The NEVER EVER was a chance the tree would survive. Some were being politically correct and didn't want to say it, but from the moment the clown dropped the stuff on the ground, it was basically a lock that the tree was gone.....just a matter of time for it to work its way down to the root system.

And he used double the potency needed......

The most amazing thing in the world is that he actually called in to a radio show and told everyone......easily the dumbest person in the state...what was he thinking?
