I am undecided as which I think is best.
teams ranked 1-4. Sounds great but the problem comes in when trying to decide who the best 4 are. 1&2 would seem like a no brainer but what about 3&4? I don't have stats at my disposal but it seems that there are more teams with similar records in those 2 spots than the top 2. Is there going to be a committee which opens the door to the criticism by schools that there is no quantifiable data to back up their decision. A formula that unless you have at min. a masters in mathematics, you can't understand. IMO a combination of both seems the best way to go in a 1-4 but how will it be weighted? Seems that the combo system would take just as long to work the bugs out as the current system.
The 4 conf. champions seems the best but has serious flaws also, which I believe have been commented on ad nauseum.
Either way there will be and to go along with plenty of

8 team tournament, conference champs/ND if ranked in top 10, then at-large the rest. 4 teams doesn't solve the issue, or there wouldn't be debate.

does the difference in the number of in conference opponents factor in. Big12 8, SEC 9. 1 SEC game IMO is like 2 ooc as far as far as a physical toll taken on the body.

Have to go with the 4 best, which I hate. If you have 4 might as well have 8 and call it quits. By no means can you go with 4 conference champs, b/c one could have a very bad year and smaller conference could have a stud deserving, plus what do you do with Notre Dame???

4 conference champs IMO.

Could you imagine something like

Nebraska/Oklahoma/Tennessee/Southern Cal

That would be a bad arse play off.

I rather be debating between the #4 and #5 team to see who gets in then let the #8 get a free pass in because they won whatever conference they were playing in.

1-4 ranked play. Since the BCS, what 5th ranked team has ever been argued to have deserved a shot at the title? None. No reason to go below the 4th ranked team in a 2 game playoff.

Top 4 by BCS ranking. No need to make it any more complex than that

Top 4 by BCS Rankings. Anymore than that, or anything that requires Conference Champions only will hurt the regular season I believe.
