The biggest change is,preseason rankings being factored in.They should wait until the season is over and then rank the top 4 teams.Coaches don't get to vote.Espn and USA Today can rank teams in preseason but it's not factored in with the four teams playing for a Championship. All the preseason rankings are based on tradition of being good and opinions of the upcoming yr.To many unknowns in the preseason that impacts the potential playoff teams that much imo.

Wait, I'm confused how are they planning on factoring in preseason rankings?

I think he means that the initial polls are used as the starting point. A bad initial ranking can stunt your teams progress moving up the polls. A win will move you up, but generally you don't slide 15 spots for a single win. Start the official poll later in the season after we have seen a few games?

They choose a top 25 every yr before a game is even played.Last yr, for example Ohio State was ranked preseason in top 15(i think) and went 6-6 or something like that.Remember Auburn several yrs ago went undefeated but was preseason ranked 25 or something like that.It cost them a chance to play for a National Title.

a playoff has nothing to do with MSU because MSU would never be in the running for a playoff.

Tommy Tuberville would let you put it anywhere you want right now for that comment.

This is stupid, because teams like Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, and Florida all start out in the Top 25 preseason, but will all probably finish outside the top 25. Teams like Baylor get F'd-over cause they get no credit for being in the preseason top 25.

I hate when that happens

FWIW I have no problem with just using the BCS rankings to determine the top 4 teams. I think it does a good job of that

By using polls to determine the rankings. Preseason rankings directly impact the final poll rankings. If two teams finish with equal records, the one that started ahead in the preseason will finish ahead the vast majority of the time.

If you go back and look at the last 10-20 years, you will see that preseason picks by media, magazines, etc. are closely copied by the AP and coaches in their preseason polls, which in turn impact the rankings as the season goes along through and including the final rankings. That's why people who say that so-and-so's preseason picks coming out in July are meaningless are dead wrong. Where the media/mags/gurus are picking you right now will play a role in where you finish.

This is true, but it's even worse than that. A lot of preseason picks are predictions of where the teams will finish, based in part on assessment of their schedules. Media (and voters) will rank a team lower in the preseason because it has a tough schedule and they expect it to lose some games. Then, starting out lower, the team has a hard time leapfrogging teams ahead of it because they started out higher. So, effectively, the team is punished for losing games that it hasn't even played yet, is not rewarded for winning those games when they do play them, and is punished a SECOND time (by being dropped in the polls) if they actually go ahead and lose them.

Sadly, this does no good. The Harris poll does this, yet every year the initial Harris poll is a virtual carbon copy of that week's AP and Coaches' polls.

Would using the BCS rankings instead of the polls not eliminate or at least mitigate that problem? I rarely have an issue with who is included in the top 4 of the BCS.

I understand the BCS includes polls but it also factors in the computers
