You can find it referenced in the NCAA Record book. The NCAA started keeping record in 1937, hence the modern era.

The 2011 book can be obtained here:

The first reference is on page 21, but you can search for them if you like.

Thanks. At least it is not arbritary but the 30's seems a bit far back. I think I'll stick with 1987 season.
