I never discounted the next question in the interview. I'm addressing the question as an individual entity, not as a preface to the following question, which it wasn't.

Don't be so defensive. The guy is a great coach and an above-average wit, he just said something mildly retarded is all.

And indeed Bama was going through a rough time before Saban. If I remember correctly Bama was turned down by several HC candidates and even in Saban's 1st year Bama was 6-7. But Spurrier's point was with all its history and resources Bama puts into having a successful football program that all you need is a decent coach, go through the steps of recruiting, and you'll be able to have X amount of decent success. Something that cannot be said for an SC or a Duke.
