Gruden

I've never understood the infatuation that college football fanbases have with him.

He's an offensive minded coach that took over a great defensive team that was built by Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffen. Sure, he won a Super Bowl in his first year at Tampa, but it was with a team that was great on defense. His offenses sucked at Tampa.

He is exactly what you guys despised in Nutt: Irratic and not consistent. Up one year and down the next two. Gruden was 57-55 at Tampa after inheriting a team built to win the Super Bowl. His next two seasons after winning the SB, he went 7-9 and 5-11. Then, like Nutt did at Arkansas, he won his division with a 11-5 record, and then went 4-12 the next year. He finished his career at Tampa going 9-7 his last two years.

Does this guy have the burning desire and energy to go out there and recruit after having a nice, cushy job for several years? He's been out of college football for over 20 years and never served as a head coach.

Sure, he's a guy that gets some splashy headlines when you hire him and he will probably do well with the team you have for one year. But...what about years 2-6? Sorry, I don't see him being a consistent, successful college football coach after year one.

This.

Plus, he took a high character roster built by Tony Dungy at Tampa Bay and replaced it with self-centered thugs. He had no QB stability and ran that team into the ground. Tampa Bay fans hate him worse than Arky fans hate Nutt. If Arkansas hires him, they end up in a couple of years like Tennessee post Kiffen and Florida post Meyer.

So he has won the highest achievement.

Also with Gruden's personality and the celebrity surrounding him it will be pretty easy to recruit kids. That and the flash of a super bowl ring. I don't think we land Gruden but lets not all pretend that he wouldn't be a game changing hire in the west. Gruden is mentioned with every coaching search for a reason. He seems like a guy that would fit in better with the college coaches anyways.
