We're Going to Miss Jim McElwain

Am I the only one Alabama fan who thinks this? The guy runs a pretty vanilla offense, but it's perfect for our personnel and it fits our traditional offensive philosophy. Of course our D made his job easier, but you can't say that he wasn't an intrical part of our success. Call me crazy, but I think we'll be missing him next year... and no, I'm not generally a negative person.

This wasn't always the case, he changed his offensive philosophy to fit Bama's personnel when he arrived.

I think we will miss how well he developed QB's but it's relatively Nick Sabans offense still so I don't expect many changes at all.

He called great plays every big game. If AJ was the QB when Julio, ingram, richardson were all still here Bama avgs 40. Ppg

Nussmeier hasn't called a play in a game the past 3 years.
I really wonder why he is already considered an extreme upgrade.

Very good OC but seemed to have issues in the red zone. Still he did a great job in game planning for big matchups. His calls against us in the BCS and UF in the 09 SECCG were great

I think the offense will be very similar in style as well. However, I Bama's offense under McElwain was a lot more deceptive than most people seemed to acknowledge with all the shifting TEs etc. McElwain successfully created a lot of matchup problems
I've always thought he was a great offensive coordinator and I'm sorry to see him go.

When did Nick start coaching offense?
I know the man is pretty much Head Coach and DC, but usually lets his OC do his job. He may like a conservative offense, but when the personnel is there (ie Rohan Davie and Josh Reed and the lack of star defensive talent) he will let his OC open it up.
When you have had the incredible defense that Bama has had and RB's like Mark Ingram and TR, there is no need to open it up unless you have to, which is rarely.

His best games were 09 SECCG and in the BCSCG against LSU. Those calls and gameplans will be legendary.
But, looking at his QB development @ Washington is what has everyone excited about Nuss. As far as leadership and off the field personality, I think he is a lot like McElwain.
McElwain had a GREAT relationship with his QBs and Coach Nussmeier has been calling McCarron just to say hey and whats up on the weekends.

Agreed 100%.
btw, don't ever underestimate the power of developing QB's and having a great relationship with them. LSU's major offensive downfall the past 4 years was Gary Crowton's horrific development of QB's. As soon as Jimbo's teaching skills left (Matt Flynn to the NFL) LSU was screwed with Crowton in charge of developing QB's.

No. I liked him too. His "ware you down, then slap you in the face" offense was always fun to watch. I'm excited about Nuss, but he isn't going to have a lot of room for mistakes in my book. I know there's going to be a little drop off because of who we're going to be missing but it better not be dramatic.

Honestly, looking back at the time of their recruitments. I wonder who would have guessed that McElroy would have won a national championship and Jordan Jefferson would not.
McElwain is/was a great asset to 'Bama. I'm glad for every minute. No one can complain. I mean he wasn't perfect there were a few games that should have been called a bit different, but he came thru in the clutch for many many games.
ETA: our downfall in between championships was leadership and I honestly didn't think that we had a TE to work with for McElwain. We didn't have that Smelley or Colin Peek. If you go back and look at his "BIG" time games. TE = the most important position on the field for the most part.
