In the late 1990s, you could say that basketball was more popular than baseball. That was because we had just won the SEC and made the big dance in back to back years. I think that in sports other than football, success is what puts butts in the seats. Football is the cash crop, so to speak, and even during crappy years, people will still drive to tailgate, hang with friends, and venture into the stadium for games. Just a different animal. I dont necessarily think that we have a poor reception for basketball, just for the product we are seeing now.

You're probably right, and that was before the Tanner era as well. Football can be seen as more than just football. It's an all-around social experience. Basketball is pure sport. No tailgating, no social gathering.
