They were awarded a split title that year. The UPI awarded Bama before the bowl game, the AP awarded ND after the bowl game. Significance of the bowls have changed over the years, along with how titles have been awarded. AP and UPI were THE standard then. Outside of 41', every poll title Bama has since the inception of the AP or UPI is legit. IMO, the 4 undefeated, untied seasons claimed, that culminated with Rose Bowl wins are as well.
