I would argue Bama's loss to Utah is the worst SEC embarrassment since SEC dominance began. That game is still being mentioned by mid majors as proof of their legitimacy. That was a Bama team 5 minutes from playing in the national title and we were blown out by Utah. Physically dominated in the trenches the way SEC teams dominate others.

I still don't understand how that Bama/Utah game happened. I cringe every time a mid-major brings it up because there is not a good comeback and saying "fluke game" is just weak.

I think that game and Boise's win over OU in the Fiesta Bowl were the two biggest turning points for non-AQ legitimacy.
Yet, even so, the BCS bowls still don't take them unless they have to, hence #7 Boise State plays in a shite bowl while #11 and #13 get at-large berths in the Sugar Bowl.
