My biggest gripe is they left out the '89 game. Didn't even mention it. That game is one of the biggest reasons the rivalry has intensified to the level it is today.

What happened in '89?

1989 makes the last two year's games look like mere scrimmages with little importance.

Up until then, the games were primarily played in Birmingham with very few in Tuscaloosa. No iron bowls were ever played in Auburn. The ticket allotments were suppose to be 50/50 for the iron bowl, but we all know that wasn't how it worked out. Up until '89 the Iron Bowl was a glorified home game for Bama. In '89 Auburn finally won the ability to have the Iron Bowl in Auburn. Bama came in highly ranked with a less than stellar AU team. Au ends up winning that game, but more importantly, getting the game out of the stranglehold that was Birmingham catapulted it into an all new level.
