Before the start of the 2010 season, UT added about 1,800 seats to what is called the west side terrace. Simply adding that to last year’s listed capacity would give UT a 101,811 capacity, or 10 shy of Bryant-Denny’s new capacity.

Bud Ford, spokesman for UT athletics, said the plan all along was to switch Neyland’s official capacity from “seating capacity” to “stadium capacity” when the five-year renovation project was finished. A stadium capacity includes every person in the stadium from souvenir and concession workers to ushers and security, whereas a seating capacity list just that, the number of seats in a stadium. The change was not done to ensure Neyland stayed larger than Bryant-Denny, Ford said.
