As for Auburn engineering, I thinks it's clearly ahead of Bama's although Alabama has been gaining some ground the last couple of years. Alabama's hurt some by having some key engineering focus spread out between the Tuscaloosa and Huntsville campus (UAH). Aerospace engineering which for obvious reasons is very strong at UAH spreads the UA system thinner in this area than AU where all the engineering focus is on the main campus. The same thing could be said regarding biomedical engineering at UAB.

There was talk about AU opening a branch campus in Hunstville a few years back. I do not know what happened to those plans.

I think Huntsville would have benefitted more in the long run from this than Auburn would. If Huntsville was anything like Bham, then they'd steal your engineering program and claim you have nothing to do with it. See the University of Alabama School of Medicine now having UAB's name and logo officially plastered all over it.
