Q&A: Dan Mullen, on MSU’s limited recruiting reach outside of Mississippi

Good read about Mullen's views on recruiting, especially dealing with his take on out of state recruiting.

Marcello: So you’re saying you can take a recruiting class that, let’s say, is ranked 35th in the nation and still be a top 10 team in a few years?
Mullen: Well, I’ll say this: I know our four-year average was 33rd and Michigan was ninth. You tell me which you team you want to be involved with on a four-year average going into that game (Gator Bowl). In theory, they should be much better than we were but I don’t know if they were or if it was just that day. When you look at that stuff, we go after players that fit our need.
To me, that’s where the recruiting rankings and perception and reality differ greatly. That, to me…

I am convinced you are a sadist. Do you think this thread is going to end well?

And I'm convinced that you are a 15 year old.
I agree with everything Dan says in this article. I like his approach to developing players that fit his system. And also agree we will never be able to recruit certain players to Mississippi State.

He brings up good points about the recruiting rankings.Coach K says, he recruits charcter over talent "Talent sets the floor of your success, character, and work ethic set the ceiling."

i actually agree with this. its not all about the numbers its about who fits in your system and need. Of course if you aren't getting the top rated players you need better coaching to push them along and you have a smaller margin for error.
plus imo if you can turn those 33 ranked classes into 9 to 10 win years you should be able to creep up the rankings and start getting better players.
problem is in the sec teams are filled with 5 star talent and combine great coaching to go along with it so its not as easy to win with 33rd ranked talent and good coaching as it would be in another conference.

if marlins stays and yall keep winning i think its possible. its all about slowly raising that ceiling. right now id say gator bowls and maybe a little more is the best he can do but if he stays and state keeps money in the program it could slowly raise up.
Its all about him staying though if he leaves then state has to find a guy like him and that is a gamble. Since they dont always work out like he has so far and all it takes is another croom to knock state back down again. The bigger schools can recover from a croom type mistake a lot faster than state.

No, I'm going on fact here. He recruits talent to Duke ...
Dont kid yourself...

There is some truth to what Dan is saying. But at the same time in order to be a major power and seriously contend for SEC title and BCS bowls year in and year out, you need to have very good talent and the numbers tell us that comes from having highly ranked recruiting classes.

Didn't say he didn't recruit talented kids.He said,he chooses kids with good character and work ethic first over a very talented player with character issues and poor work ethic.

which in the case of state they have to build to that. schools like msu and ole miss have low ceilings and there are two ways to raise them: piece by piece hard work getting guys that fit your system and building up to where you can recruit guys or go the smu route and pay the frick out of players.
number 1 is clearly harder and it takes a different kinda coach that wants to build something rather than leave to the bigger school.

It doesnt seem like he recruits character, just talent within 5 hour radius because no one outside of that would ever consider coming to state. Its like the generic response about an ugly girl... she's got a good personality. If a player doesn't have offers from other good schools and is not highly rated, Dan will say they are the type of men we need and they fit our system. Well thats fine and all If they aren't signing package deals and offering OM's "thugs" and have them at the top of their board. You would have never signed Fosselman if you held onto snoop and Tobias. But since you dIdnt you sign Fosselman to get another player, Maiden I believe, and Mullen comes out and says he's the top WR in the state. The exact same situation with Market. All that article is is a cover for not getting the top players he wanted

Ok. Lets not try and compare Duke basketball to State football. I dont see the similarities, even if Mullen " recruits like coach K"...

I agree with Merlins that you can beat a former football power with a big name with the 35th ranked recruiting class. I don't think you can consistently compete for the SEC championship though. Maybe once every 10-15 years. Having a certain system and recruiting guys that fit that system can help overcome a talent gap, as long as the talent gap isn't overwhelming.

Mississippi State, as the climate and rules currently exist, will never be able to "raise their ceiling" to the point where they are on the same level of the major players in this conference. I don't mean that as a flame or a dig at State at all, but they don't have the resources other schools have. They can be a good, solid program that goes to bowl games and consistently wins 7 or 8 games a year, but that's as far as they can take it regardless of who the coach is.

Market
I have been told is the leader among Freshmen in the weightroom this summer and had the best time in the stadium runs.
I really think that Market will play this fall on special teams.

I beg to differ
Jackie Sherrill won 10 games one year and also took us to the SEC Championship game another year.
Mullen seems to be better at developing talent than both Croom and Sherrill were.

He's a good kid, but due to his size, in the SEC, thats all he will ever play.
