Why did Louisiana not form a traditional "University of Louisiana" originally?

Could someone who knows the history of LA explain to me how Louisiana State became the prominent university as opposed to a more traditional "University of Louisiana" as you see in nearly all other states besides Ohio and Pennsylvania (with UPenn being private)?

Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College doesn't owe you any answers.

It was originally a military academy that was combined with the agricultural school.

Before then though, where would a person go in Louisiana for a liberal arts education like you would get at The University of Alabama or U of Mississippi, U of Georgia, etc? Tulane?

Ok that makes sense. So it was a public school and went private. Gotcha.

Interesting question. Usually any school with the name of the state followed by the word state is overshadowed by the school that is named after just the state. Oregon State, Washington State, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Arizona State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Iowa State etc.... But LSU is the flagship university of Louisiana. I find it a little weird too.

Same. I don't mean it as a flame at all. I am just curious of the history behind it since it developed in a way that is different from most states and all of the other SEC schools.

No, there was a separate UL, but it was merged into Tulane.

Thus, TU's official name is The Tulane University of Louisiana.

But, ULL still tries to claim UL - even though they are just part of the University of Louisiana SYSTEM, which is comprised of 8 schools.

Tulane was orginally going to be "Louisiana University", but they decided to name it Tulane University, after someone named Tulane. That's about all I know about it

Got me curious, I googled.. I was close..

quote:

Tulane emerged as a private university in 1884 when the public University of Louisiana was reorganized and named in honor of benefactor Paul Tulane, a wealthy merchant who donated more than $1 million in land, cash and securities

Yea I knew there was a UL now with ULL and ULM, etc, but I didn't know if there had always been a UL that never developed into an athletic power for whatever reason.
