Goodwin is a jackass...

The fact that Goodwin commented to the media in such detail bothered me. Why would a coach go to such lengths to speak with a reporter who obviously had an agenda? Why would a coach who is supposed to care about the young man provide quotes that could potentially endanger one of his former players' eligibility.
So I asked my Dad who coached in Alabama and the Birmingham area for 25 years and his response was, "He's a dumbass." and his actions might scare off a lot of schools from considering his less touted players (except Auburn of course). I don't know Goodwin, but according to my Dad current and former High School coaches around the area think a whole lot less of him after today's article.
My Dad sent over 10 players to play at Alabama and Auburn over the years and a few to other SEC schools. He's dealt with reporters and those looking for a story. He's received the phone calls from Finebaum and the like when they were looking for a story. His response was always, "I'm proud of all player x has accomplished and I think he will do great things at school X. He's earned the chance to play at the next level. Beyond that I can't comment," That's what Goodwin should have said.
FWIW My Dad also coached at Central Florence. He knows guys up there too.

I wouldn't want to play for a guy that I knew wouldn't have my back. I want my former coach to have amnesia.

Yes he is. That didn't stop him from sending players to Auburn, Tennessee, or LSU. Though the coaches at Auburn in the 80s did some things that turned him off that program for a while.

What case were you trying to make? I'm confused. You seem to believe that a High School coach's choice of which school to root for on Saturday has anything to do with Monday-Friday or his desire to see his players succeed.
So is Goodwin an Auburn fan? I think I've heard that somewhere...

Doug Goodwin is a well respected coach that has coached a long time without any hint of scandal.Sounds like your dad is an updyke.

Did I not say that coach's opinions of him had been lowered after today's comments? You do not do what he did today. It's just not right.
My Dad's pretty well respected...should join his friends in AHSAA Hall of Fame in the next few years...
There aren't many coaches in college or HS football that have been coaching in the are for more than 15 years that he's not on a first name basis with...

IMO, it looks like Woodruff is more of a Russelville recruiter than an Alabama recruiter..... plus RHS is the 5A equivalent of the Dallas Mavericks... chokers once they actually faced a team that wasn't from NA.

Part of the problem is some HS Coaches either keep their mouths shut or are part of the system. Some of them sleep at night because they tell themselves that they are doing it for the good of the kids. Most just like the attention. Now that some HS HC's are making 100K+, they are afraid to rock the boat.

A lot of people have a gross misconception of what goes on in the recruitment of star athletes. They think there are just these people hanging around offering large sums of money to entice recruits, and while I think that does happen in some instances it is the exception and not the rule. Most kids will go where the feel comfortable. This is especially true if the kid comes from a troubled home or lacks a father figure. If they identify and respect a coach they will go to that school.
Here's something my Dad kept his mouth shut about that MIGHT have caused issues with the NCAA. A 4/5 star recruit was on the borderline of making it into school. He came from a bad home. He stuttered until he was a sophomore in High School. He was being recruited as both a running back and for the 100 and 200m on the track team.
My Dad went to all his teachers and asked if there was a way that they could tutor him. He would learn the material and might be able to retake some tests. They agreed. He didn't go to lunch for a semester, and left practice every day (sometimes still in his pads) to make a tutoring session. He ended up qualifying and greatly improving his ACT score.
Now if a reporter had asked my Dad how he got into school or how he improved his grades and my Dad had been completely honest and forthcoming, he wouldn't have been able to play. He did all the work, but he might have been allowed some things that regular students were not. His teachers were willing to do this because they realized him playing football and going to school would change him and the future generations of his family's lives.

I do not doubt that happens alot in the coaching ranks. The question that needs to be asked is has he ever done the same thing for an non-athletic kid with the same background. This is not directed at your father, just the football mentality that exist in the state.

Well obviously, my Dad was a basketball and then football and track coach. He won championships in all three. He was involved with athletes. If they needed help, he gave it. Now, if your question is would he help any student if they asked for help? Would he stay behind after school? The answer is categorically: yes. So would any teacher worth a damn.
Would there have been a school wide concerted effort to get someone qualified? Probably not, but let's face it. Marginal students aren't really too concerned with getting into college after high school are they?

Hmmmm what bothered you more, a coach throwing Brent under the bus in the media or Peaches tossing Brent under the bus in the media a few months ago?
