Would you want to use a scholorship on a rich recruit?

I was thinking about this this morning driving in. Duron Carter is going to Bama. Bama, among others, has to get themselves under the 85 limit by August.

Would it not be a smart move to ask Duron to come on his own dime since his family is obviously well off? That way he basically takes some scrub walk ons spot and can dress and play without affecting the scholorship limit. If he says no...then there is no loss for Bama. If he says yes, it is a win for Bama.

It is not an attractive offer, by any means, to teh recruit but in all honesty, the coach needs to get his team under that limit...not concern himself with a recruits family finances...and i am not sure his other options are to play for free at a lesser program.

Great idea. Chris Carter could pay for his kid's college twice and never see the dent in the bank account.

Would it be a smart move? Maybe, but I don't see this working.

If another school in the SEC offered Carter a scholarship while Bama wants him to pay his own way...which school do you think he's going to pick?

I believe it's a little more complicated than that.

It's my understanding that having them under scholarship gives them more official access to AD facilities and services, and probably allows the coach to exercise a little more control over them.

There might be work-arounds to this, but that's my understanding.

It makes sense to us, but not to these entitled kids. It's just like when a pro athlete negotiates for an even bigger contact. They don't need the money. It's all about being respected as the best in their sport. Kids would see it that way. "If I'm good enough, you need to fork out to get me here. I'm way better than this guy. Why is he getting a free ride?" And if the kid is any good, that wouldn't be the best approach in trying to get him to your school.

There are already a few kids on Bama's roster who are assumed on scholly who are, according to a contact, already paying on their own (parent's) dime. Just a few that I've heard:

Tyler Love
Wilson Love
David Ross
Harrison Jones (i believe Barrett may also pay a portion & have some academic scholly $ as well)

I think there are 2 more and a Bryant Scholarship player as well. Point being - this is already done at some schools, but it is typically requested of legacy players and not players whose family had no previous ties to the university.

Also, Bama doesn't have to get under 85. They are already at 85 counting Carter, but not counting the above.

ETA: there are rules about a player who is a "walk on" who was also recruited. Sometimes the player pays his own way only after a period of time on scholly.

How do you think they got rich in the first place? It wasn't by passing up free money.

Uh...yes?

Duron Carter aside, why would you treat a recruit differently just because his folks are well off?
