Neither bass, Davis, lloreda were like stro but they turned LSU hoops into a very respectable opponent.
Unfortunately what we have now has turned LSU into a laughing stock and that's not right.
And you cite Bass and Davis like those have existed in LA recently. Gathers is of that caliber IMO. But he's still another year away.
Of course we need a guy that will be an NBA pick, that goes without saying. Yet, people still post "we need a (insert top NBA player) like they are breaking posting ground with this news. We know we need better players. But it's not as easy as saying he gets paid X amount of dollars we should have those players. Our best players and our program builders have come from this state. Unfortunately for us, our state has produced mediocrity the last few years.

Outside of Jabari how many of those players aren't from LA, TX, or MS?
Do we even recruit in TX anymore?

Nothing wrong with wanting. Just explain to me where that guy is, and how are we going to get him to Baton Rouge. Bass and Davis grew up in Baton Rouge for crying out loud. Lloreda was a good out of state/country find. Maybe we can find another one, maybe the high school signee is going to be like that.

I'm not sure we've really ever recruited TX. Landing Randolph was nice but didn't do anything for our program. And Tac was a bust.

No he was a 2nd round pick. Played a few seasons in the NBA - mop up duty.

That's what I am saying and what many others are saying. The current recruiting strategy hasn't panned out and when Trent was hired the thing he championed was that he can recruit that types of players he couldn't at Stanford.
O'Bryant is a start but this is season 4, the start should have happened in 09. And of course O'Bryant hasn't even stepped on the floor yet.

The recruiting strategy is to build a program, not find a one-and-done quick fix to salvage one season and then he's gone the next year (see Anthony Randolph). I would gladly take one of those guys if we have supporting players around them. But the point is that the last recruiting class was ranked very well by recruiting services, and we have a top rated player coming in this year. Trent's recruiting philosophy should put a good team on the floor next year.

How can you say the start should have begun in 2009 when basically every player for the next class was already signed? He made a decision to save scholarships. It may have been a bad choice, but it's not like he had many other options when he first arrived. I certainly think next year must change, but unless you're in this area of the country already, you're not recruiting the same players and you don't have the relationships established. College basketball recruiting is so different from football that unless you have a homegrown talent or you choose to go the JUCO route, you'll have a tough time leaving the state to sign a top player.

I'm really nervous that we're pinning all our hopes on this one guy for next year, last year it was Malcolm White and looked how that turned out. His biggest feat this year was setting the land speed record for recording two fouls in a game.

I don't think he'll be a guy that averages double figures in points in his first season like Bass or Davis, but he'll rebound, shot block, and defend the post as well as, or better than both, which is equally as important for this team IMO.

He beat out Storm Warren with a lean at the finish.

AMEN brother, the list is long of kids from out of state that JB brought here that up to this point are better than this guy has brought in in four years.
Lamont Roland, Ronald Dupree, Chris Johnson, Magnum Rolle, Regis Kounja a bust but very highly touted, Tack Minor another bust but very highly touted, Lloreda a beast, Ross neltner he was mr kentucky, the freshman who transferred from Marquette another bust but was all freshman in the league, Randolph, jabari, don't tell me we can't get big time recruits here. the above were all 4-5 star players. Some worked out some didn't but coming out of high school or juco they were highly touted. Hell we got stromile and jabari while on probation, someone is not working hard enough or doesn't know wtf they are doing.

So if you rank highly but are a bust you're considered to be on the JB list of out of state players that are better than anyone on LSU's team? Kounja? Rolle? Neltner? Is this a joke? Guys that didn't even stay here? frick you're stupid.

To note, Stringer was Mr. Basketball in Mississippi as a junior and senior. So take that Ross Neltner and jr33.

You got me on that one, but I think Kentucky is little different from MS. I guess Mr. bb in any state doesn't mean anything. Stringer really was mr bb in MS, you got to be kidding me, I would quit recruiting in MS.

I would imagine the basketball talent is better in Mississippi than Kentucky, but I really don't know.

Who really knows, I just know our recruiting strategy ain't working. I am just pissed off because the NCAA tourney is the best sporting event in the world when you have a horse in the race, the 06 final four run was as good as it gets. And here we are sitting on our helmets again with no real shot next year either. Beating Duke and Texas in the same weekend has to go down as one of the best weekends in LSU bb history. NO matter where the recruits came from.

Not sure about that one but they sure seem to hang well enough when they play LSU. Put 1 of our 2 losses in that NC year as well as this year also.

Pretty sad results for the past 2 years.
Posted on 3/13/11 at 8:34 pm to Choupique19
I call BS on that one. You do not build a program by recruiting poorly. You always recruit the best talent. This one and done nonsense is nothing but an excuse for pathetic results. How many kids are really one and done? Look at the NBA draft - it is not a majority of the players. TJ will have signed one player in 4 years that was ranked in the Top 50 of his class - ONE guy. He will have 2 that were in the Top 100 of his class. You are not going to win with that kind of recruiting.
