That is called a bargaining chip... The DA will agree that IF UpDork pleads guilty and takes a 2-4 year punishment, then no other charges. Fight it and he could face 1-10 for this crime, plus we bring in additional charges which could get you 20-40 more... So does UpDork feel lucky today, is he confident in his case?
