If people tithe or give substantial donations, the church keeps a record of it for tax purposes for their members. My mother's church does this: I'm quite sure all the others do the same.

They supposedly came up with a large amount of money in a short period of time. They'll look at previous statements of the church to see if they took in big donations from unnamed donors. There's a lot of of ways to hide cash, especially when it comes to churches and construction companies.

Some of the linked council meetings show that the church was in dissaray over 50% of the churche's net worth. Your church doesn't get that way when you have a congregation with money. A church doesn't reach that point and then all of a sudden the congregation forks up that kind of money. It had to come from outside donations, loans, or movement from one of Newton's other churches which would be fine.
ETA: or the money came from somewhere people don't want to talk about.

Cash dropped into the collection plate. Spread it out over time. Virtually untraceable, except for the spike in weekly tithes.

Agreed. Go public with where you suddenly got the renovation money and this ends. Keep the public in the dark and you will be convicted in the court of public opinion. Fair or not, this is life.
