The simple fact is that the coaching the SEC is way above where it was in 2002-2004.
Saban. Meyer. Spurrier. - three of the best coaches in the modern era came into the conference at about the same time, and since then, UGA hasn't been as good.
But probably the biggest issue for Richt is Florida. Meyer came in and restored Florida to power. Losing to UF didn't matter when Zook was here, because UF lost so many other games UGA could still win the division.
Not so after Meyer arrived.
We'll see if UGA can comeback with some new coaches.

People who have no idea what they're talking about. I'm not talking about you specifically, just people in general. It would be like me trying to tell a bama fan or florida fan or oregon fan what's going on in their program. The people on here saying Richt will be gone in 3 years, literally, have no idea what they're talking about. I keep up with this program 100x more than any bama fan or florida fan, so it really irks me when they think they know what they're saying. Because they don't.

slayer, I think our slide is a mix of both my first post and the coaching. There is NO DOUBT the coaching has increased in the conference since 2004. But it is also a FACT that our coaching, fundamentals, discipline, etc. took a steep and steady decline starting in 2005 as well. Add both of those together and it's not a good thing. But hell, we still finished #2 in 2007 and went 10-3 and finished top 10 in 2008. We've just also had some uncharacteristically bad years thrown in as well. Our talent is there, no mistaking that. Look at our recruiting rankings. The coaching is what has held us down, and that coaching is now gone. Like I said, within 2 or 3 years we'll be back to our previous form.

So there's NO way possible that richt is gone in 3 years, IYO?
Posted on 5/21/10 at 9:46 am to UFownstSECsince1950
Never say never, but it would take 3 years of winning about 4 games a year for it to happen. I don't care what the AJC fishwrapper or some dolt on ESPN says, Richt is not on a hot seat at this point. In all seriousness, if we have another year next year like this one, 7-5 regular season, he will be on a moderately warm seat. If we go 7-5 yet again in 2011 he will be on a hot seat. If we go 7-5 again in 2012 then yes, I can see him being booted. But look at history. The odds that we lose 15 regular season games over the next 3 years is about as probable as Fulmer winning the Boston Marathon.
The fact is that, even with our slide as of late, Richt still AVERAGES 10 wins a year in his head coaching career. That's damn good. We'll get back.

Of course not, richt has somehow brainwashed the entire uga fanbase that 10 wins a season and a SECC every 7 or 8 years is good enough.

Link to where an SECC every 8 years is acceptable?
Posted on 5/21/10 at 9:51 am to WG_Dawg
I think Richt makes this all go away if he wins the SEC east in 2011 like I expect him to.

Ok maybe the 7 or 8 years comment is a stretch but the other part of what I said is true. Just by your comment below.

I think there's about 115 or so coaches in the country who would kill to average 10 wins a year. If you win 10 a year, every year, you're doing something right. You can see it with Bowden, Mack Brown, Osbourne, etc. If you consistently have your team play at a high level, eventually you will get the breaks. Teams can't win the NC every year, especially in the SEC. It's too difficult. Richt dominated the league when he got here, then his staff went to hell. But he hasn't forgotten how to coach. If we consistently put a quality product on the field, which we haven't recently but I have full confidence we will again soon, we will eventually be back to where we want to be.
For the record, an SEC title every 7-8 years is NOT acceptable to me, or any other UGA fan I know.

Agreed. Richt needs at the very least a SECCG appearance in one of the next two years to make it all go away. I think this year is a stretch, 2011 sets up nicely.

So Les is diong something right then. He avgs 10 wins a season but yet he is getting ready to be out on his arse.

True but when richt had his teams in postion he shits it away.

Same could be said for Les. Again other schools will pull the trigger. UGA will not, b/c 10 wins is all richt needs to stay in his job.

Tough to argue this.
2002 --> 7 pt loss to Florida.
2003 --> 3 pt loss to UF, blowout loss in SECCG to LSU
2005 --> Shockley gets injured while team is undefeated and we suffer 4 pt loss to UF. Fluke 1 pt loss to AU in his first week back. Tough break.
2007 --> 16-12 to SC

But this simply is not correct.

This is debatable. Richt just hasn't had the luck other teams have had. Everyone but 95 nebraska has needed SOME good fortune go their way. In 2007 LSU lost 2 games including the LAST one of the regular season. 06 Florida needed a last second field goal block. 08 florida lost a game. In 2002, Richt's best year, we still would've played for the NC if there weren't 2 undefeateds in front of us. If FSU makes a field goal miami doesn't go. If OSU doesn't have "Holy buckeye" we go. Those are the things beyond our control that went against us that other SEC teams have gotten. That's just the way the ball bounces. I mean think about it, if FSU makes a field goal in 2002 and Kentucky makes a field goal in 2007, we could talk about Richt winning 2 national titles. We've gotten in position, it just didn't work out.

Yeah it's speculation, but it's not a stretch. Hell, we only lost by 4 with Joe damn Tereshinski at QB, you don't think we would've played a big better with Shock in the game?

As a head coach he averages 10 wins? By my count it's 8.5

Other schools do because they have to. Zook was not NC caliber, that was obvious. He also was a nut. Shula didn't look to be NC caliber. John Cooper didn't appear to be able to get it done. Teams pull the trigger when it's obvious a coach has gotten them as far as they can. We did the same when we realized Donnan was a hell of a recruiter but we weren't going to win anything of substance with him. Richt has shown that he has the capability to take us all the way. It just hasn't happened yet.

I attended. Game was ugly. But it was just one of those games. They were much more experienced and stronger on the OL and DL, we were young. I knew it was a bad match up as I was driving to Knoxville.
Couple that with Fulmer's back truly being against the wall for the first time and bam. 35-14.
