Big Ten/SEC Expansion....

The Big Ten is of course looking to expand into new television arkets and could potentially offer very lucrative packages to three teams.

The article above lists; UConn of New York TV market, Kansas because of the Basketball program, and Nebraska becuase their fans would eat up the Big Ten Network, as the main targets of expansion.
IF the Big 10 were to expand to 14 teams with two big 12 teams, I can see the opportunity being presented to the SEC to strike into the Texas media markets and pick up Texas ATM and an addional team. Texas and ATM can keep their annual matchup like UGA/GATech.
The Big 12 and the Pac Ten both have the weakest tv contracts in the country. But the Pac Ten has much more clout than the Big 12 and will be able to expand via Colorado / texas / Utah...
Tv contracts are becoming a daily tradition in college football. what do you think about this potential set of dominoes.

The Big 12 will not lose any significant team anytime soon. If anytime gets da boot it will be Baylor for TCU or Houston.

Why would they go after TCU??? They do not offer any significant media market that they do not already have.

The SEC will not expand beyond 12. That would mean less money to each school.

It will not be less oney for each school if the SEC can attract a lucrative team.....
In other words, we take in Tex AM. Open up Texas media markets(Dallas and Houston alone already outpace Atlanta in these terms) and be able to negotiate more for for our already very lucrative tv contracts.

They can have essentially 100% control over that Dallas Fort Worth market. They'd also bring in more money than Baylor would.

Iowa State went to a bowl game and Baylor didn't. Sure Baylor has one great athlete in Robert Griffin, but when he goes what the hell will they have? They are so far behind the rest of the Big 12 South it's not even funny.

Iowa State went to a bowl game and Baylor didn't. Sure Baylor has one great athlete in Robert Griffin, but when he goes what the hell will they have? They are so far behind the rest of the Big 12 South it's not even funny.

For the SEC to expand it would have to mean adding major media markets... because otherwise it would significantly dilute the money payout each school gets from the sweetheart television deals
Geography dictates that only a few states would seem to make sense IMO... most likely a Texas school and then maybe something like southern florida, north carolina school or maybe stretch it to virginia i guess

Few outside of Ft. Worth care about TCU, and even there it's only when they're winning. It takes a "huge" game against Utah to sell out their little stadium even with a potential shot at the Rose Bowl.

what do you think about Texas to the Pac Ten?? Yall were approached back in the 90s and I think culturally yall fit.
All fo this specualtion is at least 5 years out and all of it predicated on what the Big Ten does.
But I do think 14 team conferences are inevitable....

unless each new school added gives a new market it just dilutes each school's take

That is what we are talking about!!!
If we were to break into Texas, our media reach would automatically double. This allows us to take home much more money for each conference member...

sorry I thought your post read differently: i thought you were saying expanding to 14 was automatically a better idea.
In general i think 12 is better because it is the minimum required to have an exemption eligible conference championship game and as the big east basketball experiment may have shown adding a lot of schools to a power conference (even when most are pretty good) means some good programs are going to finish ranked pretty low in conference and may not do anyone any favors
As others have pointed out, even some pretty successful schools from big states like Texas may not add much money to a power conference

Texas' culture is much closer to the SEC than California or the west coast. Think about it. Not to mention location.
Now, there was a time when the UT power brokers were enamored with the Pac-10, mainly for academic reasons and a desire to put the Southwest conference hangover to rest. But at that time, we were lucky to go 7-5 every year and sell out a game. Now, no one wants to travel to Seattle, Corvallis, or heaven help us, Pullman for a game. Or watch it at 10 p.m.
Not. gonna. happen. I can see Texas and A&M joining the SEC w/in 10 years though. Those two are a package deal, fyi, due to state politics.

Now that is a deal that would crush the big 12 and further enrich the SEC and it's schools

But if the Big 12 were to implode, opening up the opportunity of the two largest schools in Texas, with all of their money and media markets, would immediately look attractive to the SEC cause of the region, what the schools offer(competitiveness) and how the schools will immediately benefit from more $ from more lucrative tv contracts.
