A bowl game for Jackson?

Talk of a proposed bowl game for Jackson, which first surfaced a couple of years ago, is buzzing a little bit again.
An area concert promoter, Rodney Shumpert, told the Journal on Tuesday that he’s preparing to file paperwork with the NCAA’s bowl committee for a game – the Magnolia Bowl? – that would be played at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
“It just seems like a natural, as much as people in Mississippi love football,” said Shumpert, who played football at Nettleton High School (Class of 1999) and at ICC.
(People in Alabama love football, too, but that state provides rather tepid support for its bowl games in Birmingham and Mobile.)
We’re skeptical – it seems like there are too many bowl games already, and Jackson may be problematic as a possible destination – but Shumpert says he’s getting his ducks in a row. He’s talking to potential title sponsors, insists he has a handle on obtaining the required $2 million line of credit the NCAA requires just to be considered, and has talked with officials in the offices of the SEC, ACC and Big 12.
“My main deal is to try to put together two of the power conferences,” he said.
The 2010-11 bowl schedule is likely to already see an inaugural bowl at the new Yankee $tadium added to the mix, but at least one of the lower-tier bowls could fizzle out between now and then if the economy continues to struggle.
More likely, a first appearance for the Mississippi group before the bowl committee would serve as a get-to-know-you session that might lead to a more serious effort down the road.
We’ll keep our ears open.

Um no thanks this is worse than the bowl at Legion Field.

I live right next to the football stadium in Jackson. I would not mind a good game to come to town.

LSU Ole Miss already play for the Magnolia Bowl Trophy!

I thought the state was going to tare down that stadium and build something smaller for JSU?

No need for another bowl game. There's enough of them. It just dilutes the point of bowl games to continue adding them. At this rate, we'll have 5-7 teams making it just to fill spots.
As for the bowl games in Alabama, the PapaJohns.com Bowl needs to be dropped. It's poorly attended, and Legion Field is in bad shape. The GMAC Bowl, on the other hand, has pretty decent attendance, and Ladd Peebles Stadium is in pretty good shape.

The state should consider moving the high school championships to the SEC schools in the state, like Alabama is doing now.

If they had a decent stadium and some high profile teams came it would be a good idea but i just don't see that happening

Unlike Baton Rouge, Monroe, Shreveport, and have of New Orleans.....
Anyway, Jackson does have some nice areas, but it doesn't have a nice stadium. They need to implode that god-awful stadium and build a newer one that could not only host something like a bowl but also decent concerts, neutral site games (Ole Miss vs. LSU in Jackson?), rodeos, etc.

Yeah they have an airport. They fly out to Dallas and Atlanta mostly.

I would not live anywhere else in the Jackson area other than Belhaven. I am not a suburbia kind of guy.

Is there an AIRPORT? It's Jackson, Mississippi, not Mogadishu. Idiot.

I would not mind if LSU and Ole Miss played in jackson every once in a while again.

Last year we were driving by the airport and my roommate asked what those buildings were. I was like, that's the airport. He laughed and looked at me and was like, "Oh you're serious?" He didn't believe me for months. But yeah there's an airport.

Memorial Stadium is pretty bad but the Independence Bowl in Shreveport isnt much better.
