Simply put, no, Florida was much of nothing before Spurrier. They were the Texas Tech of the SEC. Decent but never on top. Zero National OR SEC Titles before the 1990s.
It's not a slight against them, just the truth. Similar things have happened to many programs...
Miami - 3 Top 10 finishes, 0 NC before the reign of Schnellenberger/Johnson/Erickson/Davis/Coker starting in the 1980s to the Early 2000s. 15 Top 10 finishes, 5 NC during that short reign (by comparison). So they weren't much before them...and so far haven't been much after.
Ole Miss/Minnesota/Illinois/Maryland/Michigan State/Texas A & M - All mattered and were big time a long time back (varies from team to team) but recently have been middle of the pack at best teams or doormats.
