This ESPN documentary premiered on the SEC Channel last night, and tells the story of the epic clash between Texas and Alabama at the 1983 CWS. Some terrific athletes from both teams are interviewed, including Roger Clemens and Calvin Schiraldi (who was a better pitcher than Clemens at the time) for Texas, and first baseman David Magadan for Alabama. Magadan was the best hitter in the country that season, with an eye-popping .525 batting average. His college career batting average of .439 is still the SEC record.

I was there. My first CWS. Dad took me. I remember being scared every time Magadan came up to bat.

Next best chance we had was in the 90's. Right before the deciding game one of our best players stepped on a baseball in warmups and tore his ankle up. Was a starter in the field, but also pitched and a good hitter.
Roberto Vaz was his name, I believe.

What an incredible season. I recommend this book that came out last year,
One Heartbeat: The Story of the 1983 University of Texas Baseball Team, and Their Road to the National Championship.

Alabama had a great 30 year run in baseball from 1980-2010. Barry Schollenberger and Jim Wells had some phenomenal teams. Unfortunate they ran into better teams in 1983 and 1997 at the CWS.

Sounds like a good watch. Do I need ESPN+ in order to stream it?

Assuming you have the SEC Channel in your cable or streaming package, you should be able to stream it on the ESPN app via the SEC+ option (after doing a search for the title, you'll be presented with either an ESPN+ option or SEC+ Network option to stream it).
