What's it like these days?
We haven't been down there in 7 or 8 years and my wife wants to go for New Years and stay somewhere around Bourbon St. Recommendations on good food and drink would be appreciated as well, TIA

Well, Cafe du Monde is an absolute must. Their beignets are amazing. It's been over 20 years since I've been, but we LOVED the aquarium. You need to get to Pat O'Brien's for a hurricane and also to Tropical Isle/Funky Pirate for a hand grenade.

I don't know about all that. I do now know that the medical shite hits different.

Always stop in at POBs for a Hurricane. Will check out the other places.

Was there in October. Stayed at the Marriott on Canal. Walked to Bourbon Street. Some of it smelled like sewer and it was mostly dirty. Didn't think much of it. Did have dinner at Charlie Brennans, and it was very good.

That's every mid-sized to large city in the country these days.

I haven’t been in a while either, so I’m also interested how it is..
Make sure you go buy a pack of cheap cigarettes as soon as you get there. I’ve found the weird street people leave you alone much quicker if you give ‘em a couple ciggies and send ‘em on their way.

Friend,
Probably like most I have been formally visiting this area since I was a very young boy, so just to buck the trends here I would say if you have got the wherewithal and resources, a well-planned ghost tour or a historical walking tour can be time well spent with all manner of family and friends.
The surprisingly large and dispersed city of New Orleans is obviously full of fascinating cultures and history, food, and general chicanery, and walking around on foot to experience that in person can ultimately reveal experiences that you may not be familiar with.
If you're so inclined I can also give you the Top 10 things Mother and I have eaten there.
Yours,
papervvasp

also, you can stabbed walking from your parking lot to the Quarter

In all seriousness, one time we stayed south of Canal in a really nice place, but it was a bit of a walk. Ubers or whatever are basically useless because they don't enter inside the Quarter proper.
On the way in we walked past a bum who, let's say didn't look "great," leaned up against a wall.
When we came back through, turns out he had been dead for quite some time.
And then the week after we left, someone got murdered in that same general spot.
So, yeah.

I lived there years ago, and my next-door neighbor was a DEA agent.
He was afraid to go down there by himself.
