You have to wonder what fraction of Notre Dame fans are displeased with the school's response.
I'm sure they (fans/alumni) are disappointed at being left out. They may even think they got hosed and I don't hold that against them. But I suspect many are seeing the institution's response and recognize that this is a bad look.

They seem to be pretty content on social media. They think Notre Dame stuck it to the NCAA and ESPN by declining their bowl bid.

So...Notre Dame didn't play in bowl games between 1925 and 1970 because, "they are nothing more than glorified exhibitions". They actually lifted the ban in 1969 "if they were playing for a national championship".
I say, since they have opted out here...the NCAA should honor their wish and not allow them to play in any bowl games, and preclude them from the playoffs if they aren't a top 4 seed (with an automatic bye). We wouldn't want to run the risk of an "exhibition" outside of the quarterfinals.
