Is Ole Miss's 11 win season really all that special?

Yes, I realize the argument I am about to make takes our new coach down a peg. It still deserves to be discussed.

Ole Miss played SIX of the bottom 7 teams in the SEC this year per conference records. Those 7 schools (including LSU) represented all of the SEC teams with losing records in conference play.

The 6 teams Ole Miss beat were a combined 9-39 versus the rest of the conference. Granted, Ole Miss had no control over the suckitude of those other schools this season and they played the schedule the league office gave them. And they handled their business and beat all 6 teams.

But the fact remains that their strength of schedule this year was far and away the lowest in the league, coming in at 40th per ESPN:

They beat the hell out of Tulane but struggled with Wazzu.

Might all of the above help explain how Ole Miss managed to lose only once this year?

Lest you think I'm just throwing shite against the wall, consider that the committee will be grappling with these very questions while also weighing the fact that they are now missing quite a few coaches on the offensive side.

Lastly, they should be glad Auburn ran out of gas in the Iron Bowl. A one loss Ole Miss has a much more compelling case (despite the above) than a 2 loss Ole Miss after getting run out of Atlanta. Better the committee take pity on them and reward them for an 11 win season than have the committee see them play a game without Lane and lose badly.

Lane got the most he could with the players that he could get to Mississippi. He got lucky with chambliss when the original starter went out. Stuff like that usually doesn’t happen, especially after a first round qb left, and the team wasn’t tested this year.

Despite this he still won 11 games and will do much better at LSU with instate recruiting, facilities and NIL with total control.

Similar to Kansas in 2007.

that's not a bad analogy

that year, Kansas played the 3 weakest cross-division foes and their only ranked opponent prior to the big season ending clash with Mizzou was #24 Kansas State. The only Big 12 team they played that finished the regular season with more than 7 wins was Mizzou.

That said, I'm glad we have a 12 team playoff so that these teams get a chance at year end to prove themselves. It's really the only way to settle it on the field and find out who the real champion should be instead of all the endless bickering trying to pick two teams for a one game playoff. Even though that one game playoff was far better than my childhood when you were lucky if #1 and #2 even played each other.

Greatest season in the history of the school and still don’t even get to hang a Co-champs banner

I was hoping it would result in them taking down the “2003 SEC West Co-champs” banner, and maybe stop crowing about pretend national championships.

Knowing Ole Miss they will probably make that banner bigger.

They'll get a CFP appearance banner up right after their first round exit.
