I don’t know if it’s because of NIL or what, but it sure feels like there have been more mid-season head coach firings this year than ever before. From what I remember, it used to be super rare to see a coach get canned in the middle of the season. The whole Brian Kelly situation at LSU might end up setting a precedent against making those kinds of moves. I mean, for heaven’s sake, the guy was probably on track to finish with a winning record—something like 8-4 or 7-5. Couldn’t they have just waited and gotten their ducks in a row instead of rushing in and firing him after only three losses?

Early signing period is another factor.

This whole new system of mid season firings and immediate post season hirings started when USC fired Clay Helton... and spent the rest of the season courting Lincoln Riley.

Riley announced for the new job approximately 8 hours after the last game of the season. USC had their new coach in place immediately for recruiting.

A light bulb then went off for the rest of college football.

And here we are.
