This is what should happen:

Petrino to Auburn
Bert to Florida
Merlins to Arkansas
Malzahn to Kentucky

Bert to Florida

He would actually have a lot of success there now that he's sobered up and the athletes in that state would be something he's never had access to.

He's a Vandy alum. I doubt he would leave. He may leverage any interest in to a bigger paycheck though.

Lea isn’t leaving Vandy. Wants to be there like Petrino at Arkansas

Saban played at Kent State but he never was in a hurry to go back and coach there.

If Vanderbilt remains committed to Lea he won’t leave
If Petrino gets the Arkansas job he won’t leave
If Elko is successful, A&M has its coach for the next decade or more

Some coaches are about more than money

I suspect Petrino will get the job if Arkansas shows improvement. We don’t care about morals anymore.

Mullen and the Memphis coach will be hot commodities when they are both in the playoff hunt this season. Florida should just hire Mullen back.

College football is about nothing else. He will always be limited and held back because Vandy is limited in what it can offer.

In an NIL world, even Vanderbilt can be competitive. They are now, because of Pavia and good coaching. Vanderbilt is a wealthy school

They can’t compete with the rest of the SEC in facilities and fan interest though. Any head coach at Vandy will always have his hands tied in what kind of athlete he can bring in to because of the high academic standards. All that makes it harder to sustain success and play for championships every year which is what most coaches want.

Facilities and fan interest matter less in an NIL world.

And to some people, the same NiL with Nashville + the education at Vanderbilt is better than having a bigger stadium and more crazy fans on Twitter.

And contrary to most beliefs, Vanderbilt can lower admission standards for athletes. Aunt Becky got caught up in a scandal for it. They had coaches put kids on recruiting lists to lower the requirements.

You can’t build a team and sustain long term success using the transfer portal. Successful teams that compete for championships every year are built through the high school recruiting process. Vandy can have good seasons building through the portal. They can even have some great years. Mostly though they will always be below average or average. Sooner or later coaches want to win titles and compete for championships and Vandy will never be able to offer that.

Yeah ask Dabo how that is working out for him.

We are in a new era. I doubt we see an undefeated champion for the next 10 years. 10-2 is the new goal season. If they expand the playoff to 24 it becomes 8-4.

I don’t say that the portal can’t be used to fill in gaps. Bama should have found a couple of pass rushers through the portal for this season. Mostly though of the championship level teams are built through recruiting. Coach Prime tried turning over his whole roster when he got to Colorado and it blew up on him.

The portal is the only thing that improved Colorado. They were abysmal for a few years prior. The portal was a quick fix. Deion really had nothing to do with it. He's just not a very good coach.

The portal also helped State this season become a competitive football team again. And it helped Ole Miss and Mizzou stay pretty relevant for way longer than expected.
