For the past ten years, my wife and I have lived with the reality of my ALS diagnosis. We’ve had time to prepare, time to reflect, time to talk. And yet, even with all that time, the conversation about death is still hard for her. I understand that. Because no matter how strong your faith is, no matter how much you’ve prepared, saying goodbye to someone you love is never easy.
But here’s the truth: every couple will face this moment. One will go before the other. And while some are spared the pain of watching their spouse pass, it’s only because they themselves have gone first.
As Christians, we don’t have to fear death. We know what’s waiting on the other side—eternal life, the presence of the Lord, and a joy that no sorrow can touch. But that doesn’t mean we ignore death. It doesn’t mean we pretend it’s not real. It is real. And it hurts.
Losing a spouse is like losing a part of yourself. The silence in the house feels louder. The routines feel empty. The memories feel heavier. But even in that grief, God is near. He sees every tear. He holds every ache. And He promises that one day, He will wipe away every tear we’ve ever cried—including the ones we shed after our spouse has gone home.
Prayer:
Lord, help me face the reality of loss with courage and grace. Remind me that death is not the end, but the doorway to eternal life with You. Comfort those who are grieving, and prepare the hearts of those who will one day say goodbye. Thank You for the promise that You will wipe away every tear. Amen.
