Strange Radio Signals Detected Emanating From Deep Under Antarctic Ice

A group of researchers in Antarctica have found strange radio waves coming from below the ice.

According to published results, the mysterious radio waves were discovered by the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA).

Designed to capture the radio spurts of cosmic rays above, in 2006 the balloon-borne suite of instruments instead recorded pulses of radio waves from below – and again in 2014.



"It's an interesting problem because we still don't actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are," explains astrophysicist Stephanie Wissel of Pennsylvania State University.

Wissel went on to explain that the radio waves should have been undetectable, as they would have had to go through thousands of miles of rock and been absorbed.

She said that there have been some theories, but the team of researchers had no answer.
