Was he really Vandy’s best coach? I’ve managed to catch a few Vandy games every year since the Kyle Shurmur years, so I’m not familiar with Franklin. I’ve seen some good Vandy teams that matched his success I’d agree are better. That Vandy vs Baylor game, Shurmur’s senior year was a shootout. I think Vandy’s RB took 3 60+ yard touchdowns to the crib that day.

I saw some ‘best college coaches of 2025”, and in a few publications, they have James Franklin Top 10 in the Country. Was he really that good for those that remember him at Vandy or at PSU?

Brian Kelly is also unanimously a Top 10 coach nationally. I’d say that’s debatable too.

He wins the games he is supposed to and has a good record. That gets you in the playoffs now. Compare Ole Miss las year. If they manage to beat Kentucky or LSU, they might be in. That's a huge difference.

Vandy was a legit team with him. What I mean by that is they weren't just a hard nosed team that needed to catch some breaks like the recent Vandy teams that have gone to bowls. They had a much better overall roster and could compete in most games no matter who they were playing.

They only lost by 20 plus four times with him as coach in three seasons.

Three of those games were to teams that finished top 5 in the polls at the end of the year. The other was an Aggie team that finished top 18.

I never bought the myth that Vandy can’t afford to recruit. They literally never spend their $100M they get every year from the conference, donors, deals, maybe just on baseball.

Granted, they do hold athletes to the highest academic standards to get in, so that’s probably why.

They have lower standards for sports.

He's won 69% of the games he's coached in.
