Why did Birmingham Southern not simply move their university to a safer location?

In all seriousness, the location had almost nothing to do with why the college closed when it did. There was a long, long history of financial mismanagement, larger trends in higher education that are still affecting (and leading to the closures of) small private liberal arts colleges, and the effects of the Covid Pandemic.

I hope a new use is found for the campus soon so the place doesn't fall into disrepair. It could be used for all kinds of things if the facilities are maintained.

This is it in a nutshell, combined with a lack of accountability and transparency.

Why are you too stupid to use Google? Only a dumb arse would assume they shut down over safety reasons when that side of town has been a ghetto for many decades.

This is killing a lot of small, private colleges. Spring Hill College in Mobile, the 3rd oldest Jesuit school in the US just discontinued 6 majors & laid off several faculty. Their enrollment is down over 20% since Covid. Hopefully they survive & aren’t the next BSC.

Auburn University Birmingham, AUB
University of Alabama Mobile, UAM if it takes over the Spring Hill campus

Skim some money off passing a casino bill to pay for it

My son was playing lacrosse at BSC right before it closed. The story is the previous president went on a building spree thinking the improvements would attract more students. He drained the endowment to pay for it. Then Covid hit causing a drop in enrollment. BSC couldn’t recover. They tried to get a loan from the State but it was denied. It had nothing to do with the location.

To put it kindly, the people you spoke with were misinformed.

Here's an article from 2003 detailing some of the long term financial issues.

I thought Alabama A&M had purchased the property a year or so ago.

Their proposal was rejected last Summer. I doubt that the campus will eventually be bought by an HBCU, but who knows? There are only so many institutions out there that both need a former college campus and have the ability to finance the purchase.

This is what happened I know this for a fact when their students started burning black churches to the ground and killing cows donations went way down. Those idiots are out of prison now but it destroyed the college.

All universities are about to take an enrollment hit. The birthrates plummeted in the late 2000's.

Mobile already has four universities: South Alabama, UMobile (Baptist), Faulker (Church of Christ), and Spring Hill (Jesuits). They likely can't afford another one.
