Aside from Bobo being fired, stepping down or taking a demotion, It's because Thomas has only called plays for like 60% of an NFL season. He got the OC job after the start of this year when the Bears fired their OC. Not sure if he called plays after he became interim HC.

On another note, he's the one who urged former UGA WR coach, Bryan McClendon, to take the first decent NFL job he could find because of NIL/transfer era demands on a college coach. He's now the WR coach for the Stinkin' sAints

NFL coordinators usually face a learning curve in college and vice versa, sans someone like Todd Monken.
