This 12 team thing is nothing more than College Footballs DEI program. I don't know the answer but allowing teams ranked in the teens to get a bye is absurd,

South Carolina is getting screwed by the playoff committee. Their starting QB got hurt against LSU and didn't play the second half. That's why they lost.
According to the playoff committee last year, injuries to key players matter and should be taken into account.
