In 1950 Auburn finished 0-10
In April 1951 Shug Jordan was hired as Head Coach.
His first phone call went to a High School Coach in Birmingham
"I need help"
1951 record 5-5
1952 record 2-8
1953 record 7-4
1954 record 7-5
1955 record 8-4
1956 record 8-4
1957 National Championship
1958 undefeated
Notice the dip in 1952 .....This is Freeze's second year too. Young players not quite ready for prime time ....
I ate breakfast and dinner each evening across the table from that life long friend of Shug .........Knew when Dye was offered......He asked what I thought comparing Dooley with Dye. My answer? Dye won at East Carolina and Wyoming ...."if you can win there, you can win anywhere."

That’s a good example. First one I’ve seen to defend no progress in 2nd year. Props.

Difference is you’re not building a program out of high schoolers growing into young men. We’re literally a slightly better QB away from being 1-(maybe)2 loss team. That might speak to Freeze’s coaching prowess or might speak to his judgment and evaluation of QB talent. We’ll know for sure next year what his tenure will be.

I typed two paragraphs and then deleted it… this is not 1952

The difference?
Auburn was piss poor in 1950.
Between Gus and Harsin, Auburn was piss poor in 2022. When you are so bad the neighborhood high schools forgot who you were……it’s time to change stripes.
Unfortunately……..you forgot what takes to get there.
The work needed is taking place….

My GrandDad recruited and coached with Shug from 1951 to 1959.
Just think FRESHMEN. Can you teach them and keep them?
You won’t do that changing coaches every time the sun sets.
Keep in mind as well……NIL transfers? Let’s see hoe many play on Sunday…..
