Listening to Munson talk about how bad his cigar smelled made me smile.

I was living on Waddell Street and could hear cars honking and people celebrating as they drove down broad street towards downtown. Good times.

My only GA FL game, stayed one more quarter for football season before moving on.

That and two crazy Auburn games, the tie to end their win streak(was there), the overtime game, and the 1997 Cocktail Party were the highpoint as well as Tubby's win over Kentucky and NCAA run

We dominated gymnastics and country club sports in that era.

A drinking town with a football problem.

No one could understand why we struggled so much in football. Imagine UGA hiring Holtz when things went bad at Notre Dame and well before his SCU days. Could have had a strong run in the 90s.

Younger fans need to watch that. All of it. We beat Florida and the jubilation was similar to 2021. We have come a long way.

the only thing I can imagine that might compare for the younger folks is beating bama in 21. Now granted that was to win a national title so it's not EXACTLY apples to apples, but it's close.

We had fallen so far that i would say to the students and fans of the time, that game was the most enthusiastic win of that era. UF had owned us and Spurrier had run it up in Athens. The Outback Bowl felt huge waiting on Wisconsin lard arse running back to hit the hole.

Rose was special, we all were in shock at Indy waiting for a flag to bail Bama out. Indy just felt like a.monkey removed from our back.

It turns out the reason why we sucked for most of the '90s is because our shoulder pads were too big and the giant shoulder pads were slowing us down. That explains it!

And I thought it was because Ray was fricking his girlfriend during practice instead of coaching practice and Quincy Carter was too busy snorting coke to pay attention.

It started with Coach Dooley coasting to 200 and having political aspirations… then Goff being put in a spot he was never ready for. Then a lot of coaches not wanting to come to Athens and Donnan, who did better, but there were a lot of things going on that kept him from getting the players he needed.
Throw in that football changed and Dooley and Goff didn’t build a team to match it. Watching run stopping 240# LBs get torched my Florida’s spread in Sanford Stadium when we all knew it was coming was one of the lowest moments we ever had. Why 2 years later this game was so celebrated.

Didn't he get named head coach right after the Gator Bowl? Too bad the internet didn't exist back then because I'd love to know who turned us down that we were left to hire him.

He did right after the game. We were much better than Mich St, but they almost beat us. Andre Rison torched us for like 250 yards and 3 TDs. Should have been a harbinger.

I knew a lot of those guys and the consensus was “Goff? Not Haffner?Goff, are you fricking serious. Is this a joke?”

I thought all the Jan Kemp garbage has subsided by then and his '98 class was considered to be the best in the country although UT was still cherry picking some of the best players in the state.

Not sure Haffer would have done much better especially but Ray got the job because he was
a ace recruiter.

Yep. Some blabber mouth in the athletic department leaked his name to the AJC and he got so pissed he decided to stay at NC State.

Haffner was respected by all and a great football mind for the time. There was no comparison. Also, Goff was not super liked and his fake good ole boy demeanor was transparent to many recruits and players.

It was more than that. No one wanted to work for Dooley.
