But I was told that ND was a place where you simply could not recruit enough elite players to win a championship, leading to Kelly coming to LSU. It's interesting to note that the 2024 24/7 recruiting rankings have ND at 9 and LSU at 7, the 2025 ranking currently has ND at 1 and LSU at 3, still early of course. ESPN's preseason top 25 has ND at 10 and LSU at 14. None of this necessarily proves anything, but it sure looks like ND can in fact recruit elite players, maybe it was the recruiter and not the school.

As far as being in the SEC, hell no.

Doesn’t that data suggest that both arguments have some truth to it? That Kelly has trouble recruiting but got a boost from LSU, and that Notre Dame can recruit at a fairly high level with a gifted recruiter running the ship?

ND would have to give up too many of their rivals to ever consider joining the SEC, and they have no current motivation with the playoff expansion to join a conference anyway.
