The mythical national champions were decided before the bowl games. In other words, the bowls didn't count at all toward final results. This was almost 100 years ago, and coaches and the public thought completely different about the game. General Neyland looked at bowls as a reward for the players, a chance for them to let off steam and enjoy their successful season. He had loose reins on the players, and they took full advantage in Hollywood and even on the train trip out. For anyone who cares, it's an interesting read.
