The problem is not NIL - it’s the wide-open portal and the rampant tampering of rosters as a result. Coaches have to recruit new kids, existing kids, and keep a constant eye on the portal in case some players just bail.

So another question comes to mind. In basketball, you have 13 scholarships. What if they want/have more than 13 qualified players. Can they just tell the 14th person that we don't have a "scholarship" for you, but here's an extra 50K in NIL money to pay for the things the scholarship pays for. Is there a reason teams can't do this?
