There is no luck involved. It's not a coin flip. They aren't picking names out of hat. It's not DEI. It's merit based, and Alabama was able to make the playoffs without playing in the game because they had already proven themselves to be good.
Georgia on the other hand needed the mulligan because they got blown the frick out by Auburn the first time, 40-17.

There is always luck involved once you lose. You need others to lose as bama saw AU do in 2017. It’s extra luck when you don’t make the conference title game, and still get in. Lots of “proven to be good” teams don’t get that lucky, and they miss the playoffs.
At least uga was forced to beat AU, while Bama just sat and rested up.
