We have 6 national championships compared to Texas at 4.

I don't think so.

1938 -- legit

1940 -- NO WAY, JOSE'!!! Ranked #1 by only one NCAA recognized service, Dunkel Rating System. Tennessee finished 10-1...Minnesota, at 8-0, was the overall consensus champion while Stanford (10-0) was voted #1 by 4 other NCAA-recognized services.

1950 -- legit; however, Oklahoma was the UPI and AP champion while Tennessee was the consensus champion. Only Princeton finished undefeated in the nation at 9-0 and was voted #1 by two NCAA-recognized services.

1951 -- legit; Maryland was consensus champion; 4 other schools voted #1 by various polls/services; Tennessee was the AP and UPI champion.

1967 -- NO WAY, JOSE'!!!; Tennessee finished 9-2 and was voted #1 by Litkenhouse Ratings Service; USC was the consensus national champion by a long shot, including both AP & UPI polls; Oklahoma and Notre Dame were voted #1 by a single rating service (NCAA-recognized).

1998 -- legit

Tennessee should only be recognizing 4 national titles -- not 6. But, they do have the right to claim 6 per NCAA. Up until several years ago, Tennessee claimed only 2 titles (1951 & 1998). They then went and added the other 4 titles to make it 6. Many other schools have done the same thing. It's called, "Alabaming" their records.

Texas claims 4 national titles (1963, '69, '70, '05) -- however, they were voted #1 in 5 other years by at least one NCAA-recognized poll/rating system (1914, '41, '68, '77, '81).

HOWEVER........I believe Tennessee has first rights to claim the "UT" designation, not Texas. Texas can be UTx (which makes the most sense), UTA or whatever else -- but, not UT.

As the bitter Aggie says... People in Texas know UTA as UT Arlington.

Since Austin likes to go by ATx... UTx makes sense.

However, for the most part Texas fans/alums stick their nose in the air and pompously proclaim that they are "The University of Texas" in a similar fashion as "The Ohio State" fans/alums.

So be prepared. And this even seeps into the TV announcing at the games. Your team will be referred to as OU, Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, etc. But many times instead of them just being "Texas" they will get the full "University of Texas" thing.

Something like "And the final score....Tennessee 24- The University of Texas 21"

In 1986 the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas agreed to share the well-known interlocking “UT” trademark that both schools use. Tennessee applied for registration of the trademark for the sale of jewelry, paper, metal and leather goods, as well as printed matter, housewares, glassware, and clothing. Texas owned registration of the trademark for educational and entertainment goods. Tennessee’s and Texas’s trademarks are different but similar enough to cause confusion to manufacturers, who have used them interchangeably in the past. The agreement gave Texas commercial rights to the trademark west of the Mississippi River and Tennessee the rights east of the Mississippi and in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana (home of LSU).

SUMMARY
Texas owned the trademark for some things.
Tennessee applied for the trademark for other things.
They mutually agreed to both use it.

This isn't complicated.. but then there is this..

7 SEC states say Texas is UT
5 SEC states say TN is UT
37 other states think Texas is UT
Maine apparently abstained from voting..

As for what I want you to call us..
Texas
UT
tu
Texass
TX
UTa
UTrans
something else..

Makes no difference to me.. even if we all decided on one way.. some would still call Texas UT and some would still call Tennessee UT..

It's a stupid fricking argument either way.
