This whole thing makes me wonder if chasing the newest talent in the portal isn’t counter productive. We go out and get Etienne for who knows how much and then lose a kid like Paul that committed to the G in the beginning and was waiting for his time.
If the message is to commit to the G and put in your work and be patient what kind of message does it send to bring in guys from other schools to plug in ahead of you in the depth chart?
Plus, as a fan I was much more excited to see Paul finally hit the field than I am about Etienne.

ESPNU radio on XM made a really good point the other day when they discussed that a lot of these transfer portal decisions are not necessarily coming from the kids directly, but rather from the coaches who are pushing them in a certain direction when they believe that they're not going to be able to see the field.

In all fairness, the biggest school with interest in Paul is Oregon then it drops to like Kansas State type programs. He looked good against the second and third string. We have no idea whether that big sideline run early in G Day was the correct read or not. He could’ve got chewed out later for not cutting it inside. I guess my point is that A: if you’re still doubting our coaching staff at this point, seek help, and B: clearly he wasn’t some huge target people were just desperate to see become available. Relax.
Whether Andrew Paul goes on to be the best college RB of all time or not, it was still the correct decision to take Etienne at the time. The dui and probably being suspended game 1 doesn’t change that. Neither does Paul looking good against backups in a spring game.
